This month we opened our new MUNDAKA BC store in San Sebastián, a step that fills us with excitement and feels like a natural part of our journey.

Our story begins in 2013, in our hometown of Mundaka. There, facing the sea, Mundaka BC was born as a way to experience surfing beyond the water: as a culture, as a style, and as a community. From day one, we committed to doing things our way, designing fashion with identity, creating our own surfboards, and building a brand with deep roots in Mundaka and Urdaibai.

Over the years, we’ve grown without losing sight of what’s important: respect for the environment, our culture, connecting with people, and the free spirit that brought us here. Every step has been thanks to the support of those who have believed in the project from the beginning.

Today we arrive in San Sebastián with the same essence as always. The shore has changed, but not our course. We continue to look to the sea, listen to the wind, and paddle forward.

Here we are. And here we will stay.

CON TU PERMISO – LUISA SORRIBES PERIS

Maria Luisa Sorribes Peris, affectionately known as Luisa, takes us on a journey from her peaceful hometown of Artana to our Mundaka, a place she found by chance but that resonated deeply with her during her creative process. Through his books “Y SI PUDIERA…?” and “CON TU PERMISO” Luisa shares not only intimate stories, but also her love of life, literature, and human connection.

His meeting with Mundaka during a trip to Bilbao was an unexpected turn that enriched his narrative. By writing about our town, Luisa not only wanted to weave a story, but also leave a mark on those who read her words. Mundaka became a significant setting in her work, inviting readers to explore its narrow streets and seascapes, feeling the same warmth and hospitality that Luisa experienced.

The presentation of his book “CON TU PERMISO” at Mundaka BC promises to be an event full of emotion and connection. Through her stories, Luisa reminds us of the importance of following our dreams, overcoming our fears and finding beauty in the most unexpected places. Her story is a reminder that sometimes life’s coincidences can lead us to wonderful discoveries and encounters that change us forever.

X. ANNIVERSARY

On August 1, 2013, MUNDAKA BC opened its doors. And, ten years later, here we continue trying to bring Mundaka and the Basque Country closer to the world, through our brand, MUNDAKA BASQUE COUNTRY (MUNDAKA BC).

They are ten years in which many things have happened, including a pandemic. Ten years in which we have learned a lot and worked harder. Ten years in which we have felt the warmth of our customers, regular or sporadic ones. Ten years that encourage us to go for another ten.

We could say that we are no longer a young brand. Although in spirit we will always be. We will continue working and evolving our collections, improving each year.

And we will continue to be more than just streetwear fashion. Our culture, in all its expressions, and our territory are in our DNA. And we feel obliged to value it. Our culture, our people, our landscapes and our lifestyle are part of who we are.

Next Saturday, July 29, we would like to celebrate our birthday with you. And toast for another ten years. We will wait for you!

MUNDAKATIK URDAIBAIRA EXPO

Many are the expos and artists that have passed through Mundaka BC. And all of them have left their mark and are part of who we are today.

Renowned painters such as our Enrike Zubia, permanently present in his private corner of MBC, and Gorka Gondra, a basque painter based in Paris, or our Josu Cabriada and Imanol R. Lecosais.

Big photographers like Carlos Orue, whose work is currently on display, Pierre Capdeville, Arkaitz Solagaistua, Iratxe Unzueta and our dear Leire Mendizabal and Jon Fonda.

Multidisciplinary reference artists such as Rober Garay, Naiel Ibarrola, Andrea Abalia and Lander A. Luzarraga.

Thematic exhibitions such as MAYDAYTERRANEO by Salvamento Marítimo Humanitario, LA LEGEND DE LA CIDRA by Sidrería Astarbe, AZALETATIK SUSTRAIETARA by Amets Rodriguez and UHAINA SURF & ART by the great Nora Cucurull.

Books have also been protagonists. Writers such as Juan Antonio Urbeltz, Álvaro Urkiza, Pedro Ibarrola. Aída García Bildósola and the magic of Rober Garay & Fernando Palazuelos have passed through MBC, to share their works with us.

And we must not forget the MUNDAKAKO ARATUSTEAK exhibition, which is common in our space.

And this Christmas comes… MUNDAKATIK URDAIBAIRA. A photographic exhibition of @bare_zaharra. Photography in essence, Urdaibai in essence. A special exhibition. Perhaps it is the most special …

CARLOS ORUE EXPO

Carlos Orue was born in Bilbao on June 24, 1975. In December 1981 his family emigrated to Australia and they settled in Sydney, where they lived for the next 38 years. Carlos recently returned to his native land and currently lives in Bermeo, where he grew up until he was 6 years old.

The return home and his passion for photography have led him to start a personal photographic project, portraying with his camera those places that were recorded in his childhood.

“My passion is nature and photographing landscapes that inspire me with peace and tranquility. My camera is an extension of my body and wherever I go, it is with me. My luggage consists of a pair of Canon cameras, a 5D MKIII and a 6D. My preferred lens is a Zeiss 16mm f / 2.8. Taught myself photography out of pure passion, lots of practice and consuming hours and hours of videos on youtube”.

In 2014 he was shortlisted in the Astronomical Photographer of the Year competition organized by the Royal Greenwich Observatory, in association with BBC Sky at Night Magazine and Flickr. Two of his images were exhibited during 2015 at the Greenwich Museum and included in the book published for this purpose by Collins.

His photos have been featured in advertisements and various Australian Sky & Telescope magazines, Universe Today and documentaries produced by the BBC (British Broadcast Company) and ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation).

From January to June 2021, Carlos Orúe’s work will be exhibited at MBC. His photographs will teleport us to another dimension. Have no doubt …

GORKA GONDRA EXPO

Gorka Gondra

Born in Bilbao, Spain in 1978. Studied applied arts and graphic design in New York. Lived and worked in the Middle East, USA, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and now is based in Paris. His work follows the lineage of abstract expressionism in continuation of its Basque Modern Art heritage.

Abstract minimalism.

These abstract minimalistic paintings are result of studies between the relation of void and shapes in three-dimensional architectural forms translated into canvas. Modernist shapes are grounded in complex geometric forms in order to create multiple readings of the final image, always perceived in motion by a constant shift from negative to positive spaces and vice versa.

#MAYDAYTERRANEO EXPO

Salvamento Marítimo Humanitario es una ONG fundada en 2015 en Zarautz para dar asistencia en las arribadas que se estaban produciendo de forma continua en la isla de Quíos.

A partir de agosto de 2017, el equipo en Grecia empieza a gestionar una clínica de asistencia primaria en el campo de Vial. Desde entonces, atienden a una media de 30 personas al día que sufren enfermedades típicas del hacinamiento y la exposición a las duras condiciones del clima: intenso calor en verano, bajas temperaturas en inverno; sarna, picaduras de serpientes y otros insectos, ataques de ansiedad, etc.

Ese mismo año, pusieron en marcha el proyecto Maydayterraneo: un barco de rescate en el Mediterráneo para auxiliar a aquellos que zarpan desde África en botes precarios. En 2017, rescataron a 575 personas que estaban a la deriva.

Durante 2018 decenas de voluntarios y voluntarias trabajaron en la remodelación de un antiguo atunero para convertirlo en el Aita Mari, un buque de rescate.

En la actualidad, el Aita Mari navega por el Mediterráneo como parte de flota solidaria de ONG. El Aita Mari es la respuesta solidaria de un pueblo que no quiere quedarse de brazos cruzados mientras miles de personas se ahogan cada año por culpa de las políticas migratorias europeas. Para que nunca, nadie, pueda decir que no lo sabía.

Porque fuimos refugiados, seamos refugio.

ENRIKE ZUBIA EXPO

Enrike Zubia Elordui nació en Bermeo en el año 1947. Desde muy pequeño se interesó por el dibujo y la pintura. Ya a los 6 años salía de la cordelería de sus padres al parque, donde los hombres que esperaban la hora de entrar a trabajar le surtían de tizas. Así comenzó a esbozar los primeros dibujos, utilizando el mismo suelo como lienzo.

El pueblo costero que le vio nacer ha marcado tanto su obra como su temática. Se alimenta de la tierra y el mar, de los puertos vascos; de la vida que hay en ellos y de sus gentes. El artista capta la vida de los arrantzales con pinceladas rápidas donde están muy bien estudiados los matices etnográficos del pescador vasco.

La figura y el paisaje son sus dos mayores debilidades a la hora de coger el pincel. Su registro cromático muestra su capacidad de vencer cualquier dificultad artística.

1963: con 16 años ingresa en la Escuela Taller de Damasquinado y Grabado de Eibar, siendo alumno y posteriormente gran amigo del maestro y artista eibarrés, Lucas Alberdi.

1963-1965: recibe clases prácticas de Damasquinado (dibujos alegóricos y arabescos de oro incrustado en superficie o relieve, sobre metal: pistolas, revólveres, escopetas de caza, placas conmemorativas, …).

En 1965 obtiene el título de Maestro Damasquinador. También recibe las primeras nociones de moldeado en bajorelieve y altorelieve, con vaciado en escayola, trabajos alegóricos con retratos de personajes.

Ahí comienza a dar sus primeros pasos con la pintura al óleo, que completa con las clases de dibujo en la escuela municipal de Eibar, con el maestro Lucas Alberdi.

Desde entonces hasta el día de hoy, la pintura y escultura han sido su fuente de vida, convirtiéndose así en un artista de plena dedicación y a tiempo completo.

Un honor abrir las puertas de nuestra casa a Enrike Zubia. Podréis disfrutar de su arte, de junio a diciembre, en Mundaka BC.

ARKAITZ SOLAGAISTUA EXPO

Amante del mar, la naturaleza, la naturalidad, de la esencia de los pequeños momentos, de robarle imágenes al tiempo. Criado desde muy pequeño alrededor de la naturaleza, la fotografía, del arte, de las exposiciones, de lagos, montañas, de playas y de sesiones de diapositivas.

Enamorado totalmente de la fotografía en general, a Arkaitz le encanta realizar cualquier tipo de proyecto donde la imagen sea protagonista. Desde una sesión de surf a un evento social ó fotos de naturaleza, pasando por la gastronomía y llegando a un concierto.Busca la esencia en cada cosa que hace. Busca el alma de cada nuevo proyecto.

Con 13 años después de haber usado un par de cámaras reflex Zenit y otra Practika de su familia, le regalaron su primer equipo de la marca Hanimex, con objetivos fijos y un gran angular con el que empezó a realizar fotos de skate. Así comenzó su aprendizaje, de una forma totalmente autodidacta. Con tiempo llegó su primera reflex Canon EOS 500 y después ya todos los equipos reflex digitales que ahora usa, añorando, eso sí, la magia de los carretes.

Arkaitz lleva ya más de 15 años fotografiando la magia del mar y del surf. Pasen y vean!
