MUNDAKA BC By ANE BAZTARRIKA

We present you ANE BAZTARRIKA. And her collection MARGO OLATUAK. Her vision of our brand. She will work with us in our section Mundaka BC By. Be aware!

When the collaboration with Mundaka BC was set, I knew right away that I wanted to work on the relation between the sea, the waves and ink.

The technique I decided to use is Japanese Zen painting which may be regarded as a form of expressionistic art that captures the unseen. The goal is to capture the essence of the object (invisible) obviating the external facade and expressing it in spontaneous and simple strokes. To try to capture the essence of the waves I held the brush perpendicular to the surface and moved it with my whole arm feeling different directions, energy and flows.

Each bag is hand painted and although each result is different, the shape that represents Mundaka BC frames all those unique waves.

Growing up in San Sebastian I was surrounded by art and the ocean. I studied Fine Arts and Graphic Design in the university of the Basque Country. A few months before graduating I had the chance to enjoy an Erasmus scholarship which allowed me to study textiles design in England.  Back in San Sebastian I started developing pattern collections and applying my printing skills on different surfaces. After a year I moved back to England to live in Manchester  where I specialized in textiles and received my  Master’s degree in design.

When my study in Manchester was finished I decided to move to the Netherlands to learn how small studios work. For the first six months I worked as part of the team behind Lilesadi in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. With them I designed patterns for cushions, packaging and other products. We participated in a few international fairs (Playtime in Paris and Salone Satellite in Milan) where I helped to design and build the stands and was able to show some of my designs.

At the beginning of the summer of 2015, the artist collective YEDS offered me to be part of the Keilefest market in Rotterdam.  This for me was the starting point to launch my own brand.

Hand painting, Scandinavian and Japanese design, and minimal expressive art are my main inspirations. A few years ago, I learned about zen painting and through practicing painting bamboo leaves I started exploring its use for graphic patterns. Currently I am working on ways to transform the fluidity and subtlety of ink wash painting into a graphic and minimalistic style.

As I don’t see a separation between art and life, I want everyday objects to be my canvas. That’s the reason why I started a hand painted bag and ceramics collection where I can combine my passion for art and functional design. I hand paint them intuitively with brushes, and one by one, leading to unique and unexpected outcomes.

From March to June I am starting a new adventure in Japan. During these three months I will develop several projects,  including a very special one in collaboration with photographer Ivar Teunissen. Together we want to tell the stories of the people that we will  meet on our journey. Ivar will take the portraits, which we’ll print so that I can paint on them, capturing both the personality of the person and the emotions of the meeting. Organic cotton is cotton that is produced entirely environmentally friendly and is processed.

This means that no pesticides or chemicals are used as formaldehyde in this process. By taking this out from the process, better working conditions for farmers are being created and the groundwater pollution is reduced drastically. There is less risk of skin irritation to the end user and feels softer than conventional cotton.

Fairtrade is the well-known label Max Havelaar, which ensures the fair distribution of international trade. This will ensure that the farmers in the producing countries (in this case India) get a fair price for their cotton. GOTS is an international standard for all of the biological textile and ensures that there is at least 70% cotton is used in the production of this bag.
